Letting Go Without Waste: How to Find Good Homes for Your Stuff
One of the things we hear most often from our clients is, "I just want to know it's going to a good home."
It's rarely about the object itself. More often, it's about the memories, the money that was spent, or the hope that someone else will truly appreciate it. That emotional connection can make it incredibly difficult to let go.
The good news is that your belongings don't have to end up in the landfill just because they're leaving your home!
With a little extra thought, many items can find a meaningful second life through local nonprofits, mutual aid groups, Buy Nothing communities, schools, artists, repair organizations, or someone who's been searching for exactly what you're ready to let go of. Sometimes it takes a bit of research to find the right match—and in some cases, you might even earn a little money along the way! Knowing your belongings will continue to be used and appreciated can make the process of letting go feel much more rewarding.
It's also worth remembering that finding the perfect home for every single item can become overwhelming. If you have an entire household to sort through, it's okay to focus your energy on the things that matter most. Maybe it's your vintage Apple computer, your collection of Victorian postcards, or a rare Ngoma drum you no longer play. Prioritize rehoming those special items, and allow yourself to be a little more flexible with everyday belongings.

We thought we would have to recycle this old relic of an Apple computer because it started smoking when we turned it on. But Tommy was determined, and after a little sleuthing on reddit, he found a local retro computer club that was excited to restore it!
After trying to resell this drum for months (no bites even during Faire time, can you believe it?!), we connected with the Kutisinhira Cultural Arts Center and they were thrilled to use it in their drumming classes.
This client’s family collected textiles from Guatemala in the 70s. We have been chipping away at reselling it locally for the client and have had so many great interactions with craftspeople and seamstresses who plan to give it a second life.
